Six more Camden County residents have lost their battles with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) over the weekend, and an additional 1,005 have been infected with COVID-19, according to reports from the Camden County government.

That brings the local impact of the pandemic to 24,272 infected residents and 677 related deaths.

Camden County is consistently tracking more than 350 new positive cases of the virus per day.

In a written statement Monday, Freeholder Director Lou Cappelli expressed his concern and sorrow for those who have been lost to the pandemic.

“Today we saw the first vaccination for COVID-19 in the United States, yet by the end of the day, thousands of Americans will have been killed by the disease,” Cappelli said.

“We are closer to the end of this pandemic than ever,” he continued, “but please do not think this crisis is over. We must continue to wear masks and social distance or we will lose countless others before a vaccine is widely available.”

The six recently deceased Camden County residents are:

  • two Camden City women in their 90s, and a man in his 30s
  • two Cherry Hill women in their 70s
  • a Gloucester City woman in her 90s

Throughout New Jersey, 405,448 people have been sickened by COVID-19, and 15,907 have perished from causes related to the virus. In addition to those lab-confirmed fatalities, the state also recognizes another 1,868 probable COVID-19-related deaths.

LTC cases and deaths

Long-term care (LTC) facilities account for almost half of all deaths in the state and 11% of those infected, and new cases continue to occur there.

Of 24,272 reported local COVID-19 cases, 2,731 (11 percent) have originated in a Camden County LTC facility: 1,821 are residents and 910 are staff.

LTCs are believed to be associated with 54 percent, or 366 of 677 total deaths in Camden County: 363 were residents and three were staff.

At this time, 29 of the 56 LTCs in Camden County are experiencing an active outbreak of COVID-19.
