UPDATE: (February 12, 2024 – 10:23 a.m.) Authorities confirmed that a pedestrian who was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle in Haddon Township Sunday evening did not survive the crash.
Moreover, the vehicle that may have hit her appears subsequently to have collided with the front of a restaurant across the street — and witnesses believe it was unoccupied at that time.
First responders were on the scene of East Holly Avenue in the area of the White Horse Pike shortly after 6:00 p.m. Sunday for reports of a person hit by a vehicle.
Neighbors said they heard the sound of a collision and called 9-1-1 thereafter.
MEPRI (Mount Ephraim Police Reserves Incorporated) EMS transported one woman from the scene to the trauma unit at Cooper University Hospital in Camden City.
On Monday, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office (CCPO) announced that the woman had perished from injuries sustained in the crash. Subsequently, family members of the victim have identified her as Cristina Rios Reyes of Audubon.
Across the street, in Oaklyn, a red Jeep that may have been connected with the incident broke through the retaining wall outside the front patio of Los Jalapenos Bar & Grill.
There, restaurant owners Jose and Ever Merino reviewed security footage that appeared to show that the Jeep was unoccupied at the time it collided into their property.
They further related second-hand accounts from passersby that no one emerged from the Jeep after it rolled through the intersection at the Pike.
No information was immediately available from authorities at the time of the incident.
Haddon Township Police deferred media requests to the CCPO, citing an ongoing investigation.
Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact Det. Robert Mulhern at 856-833-6220 or Det. Samuel Funchess at 856-397-4000.
