Authorities have announced an arrest in the shooting death of 21-year-old Pennsauken resident Joshua Simmons.
Twenty-three-year-old Isaiah Pascall of Pennsauken has been charged with first-degree murder for killing Simmons. The shooting followed “shortly after a physical altercation involving an isolated group of individuals” in the unit block of Russell Avenue, according to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office (CCPO).
Pascall is being held on $750,000 bail at the Camden County Jail pending future arraignment. If convicted, he faces a sentence of 30 years to life imprisonment, with or without the possibility of parole.
Merchantville Mayor Ted Brennan said he was grateful that police had made an arrest, and complimented the interagency efforts that led to it.
“It certainly is a relief,” Brennan said. “I know there was a lot of hard work by our chief and our detectives along with the prosecutor’s office and police from Pennsauken as well. It puts the residents at ease and we can get back to doing what we normally do in Merchantville, which is moving the town forward.”
Brennan said he plans to visit with residents in the area this week.
The shooting took place Monday evening, when first responders discovered Simmons unconscious on the sidewalk of Russell Avenue. He was transported to the nearby Kennedy Hospital in Cherry Hill, and was pronounced dead little more than a half-hour after EMT’s had arrived on the scene.
All persons charged with crimes are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
