An elderly Cherry Hill woman was transported to the hospital after a fire ripped through her Colonial Apartments home Thursday morning.
Cherry Hill Fire Chief Chris Callan said the alarm went out at 10:10 a.m., drawing a response from nearby fire stations within the township, as well as from supporting companies in Mount Laurel, Pennsauken, and Westmont.
The first firefighters to the scene arrived to smoke showing out of a fourth-floor apartment balcony and reports of a trapped resident, Callan said.
“The first company went to the fourth floor, entered into the apartments, and found a decent-sized bedroom fire that extended into the hallway,” the chief said.
“They removed the occupant to the balcony until they could get water onto the fire,” he said. “Then they took the occupant out through the stairs after the fire was under control.”
The fire was placed under control within 30 minutes with help from some neighbors in the building, who pitched in with fire extinguishers, the chief said.
The resident was transported to Cooper University Hospital for evaluation. No other civilians or firefighters sustained injuries in the incident.
