Cherry Hill Police are seeking help identifying a man they say impersonated a police officer, performed a fraudulent traffic stop, and tried to grab a woman through her driver’s side window.
The incident occurred Monday, August 16, a little after 1 p.m. on Route 38 in Cherry Hill.
According to a statement from the Cherry Hill Police Department, the woman reported having been pulled over by a man driving a white Ford van with red and blue LED warning lights in the grill and on the rear doors.
He is described as having been in his 30’s, “with dark red or brown hair and a mid-length beard, [and] wearing a blue t-shirt with ‘POLICE’ across the front,” according to the statement.
The man then allegedly approached the driver’s side window of the woman’s vehicle, and reached inside, grabbing for her neck.
She pulled away and fled the scene.
New Jersey State Police reported similar incidents occurring in Brick and Wall Townships this month, involving a bearded man driving a Ford Crown Victoria with a blue dome light. Cherry Hill Police could not confirm whether those incidents are believed to be related to Monday’s.
On Thursday, Cherry Hill Police offered tips for residents who believe they may be pulled over under false circumstances.
Anyone who can identify the vehicle or its driver is asked to call Cherry Hill Detective Robert Daniello (856-432-8834) or e-mail rdaniello@cherryhillpolice.com.
