A fight that broke out at a motel party in Cherry Hill over the weekend sent a 24-year-old Willingboro man sent to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds.
The shooting was reported around 3 a.m. May 16, according to reports from the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office (CCPO), which noted that the victim is in stable condition at Cooper University Hospital.
“A large fight between numerous females had broken out in one of the rooms during a party,” the CCPO noted in its report, and “the shooting occurred after the altercation spilled outside.” An estimated 100 to 150 people were believed to have been at the party.
Cherry Hill has discussed redeveloping the motel properties that line its borders, but has not announced any formal plans to do so just yet. In January, township spokesperson Bridget Palmer said that the township is looking to clean up “a crime element…especially at the motel sites” at its peripheries.
“Our police department schedules regular patrols in the area,” Palmer said at the time. “It is a drain on resources…and it really doesn’t fit with the rest of the town.”
Cherry Hill police have also shut down a pair of human trafficking incidents at hotels in the township within the past two years, including a recent undercover sting in January. Trafficking is not believed to have been a concern in this instance.
The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have yet been made. Anyone with information should call CCPO Det. Vince McCalla at (856) 225-8569, Cherry Hill Det. Pete Benedetti at (856) 488-7828, or e-mail ccpotips@ccprosecutor.org.
