Another seven Camden County residents have died of complications related to novel coronavirus (COVID-19), and 100 others have been sickened by the virus, the Camden County government reported Thursday.

Locally, 6,529 residents have been infected with COVID-19 and 320 have died from related complications.

Throughout New Jersey, 157,815 people have been sickened by COVID-19 and 11,401 have perished from related causes.

COVID-19 cases are doubling at least every 30 days throughout all of New Jersey, save Salem County, which stands at a 22-day doubling rate. The statewide average of COVID-19 spot positivity testing stood at 6 percent May 24.

Spot positivity is a snapshot statistic, and the state’s report excludes serology tests, which can confirm the presence of COVID-19 antibodies, but not whether a patient actively has the virus.

According to the state health dashboard, on May 28, Camden County was sixth among all New Jersey counties in new cases of COVID-19, with 67.

Of 6,429 reported local COVID-19 cases, 1,465 (23 percent) have originated in a Camden County LTC facility: 1,098 are residents and 367 are staff.

LTCs are believed to be associated with 74 percent, or 236 of the 320 total deaths in Camden County; 233 were residents and three were staff.

About half the 56 LTCs in Camden County (27) have experienced at least one case of COVID-19.

“In the past 24 hours, the country has reached a tragic milestone in having lost more than 100,000 Americans to this insidious virus,” said Camden County Freeholder-Director Lou Cappelli in a statement.

“Today, our thoughts and prayers are not only with those in our community, but with the families and friends of victims across the United States,” Cappelli said.

“As a nation, we will get through this crisis, but the families who have experienced a loss due to coronavirus can never be made whole again,” he said.

“It is my sincere hope that we are past the worst of this pandemic, and that another family will not have to face the pain of losing someone they love.

“As we move forward, please continue to social-distance, wear a face cover or mask, and practice good hand hygiene,” Cappelli said. “This is the only way we can save lives and prevent future tragedies.”
