The move signals the end of a nearly 10-year run for independent grocery owners Pete Burgess and Janet Stevens.

Four months after announcing the planned closure of both of their independent groceries in Collingswood and Merchantville, McFarlan’s Market owners Pete Burgess and Janet Stevens have finalized their departure from the food business.
Saturday, December 14, will be the final day of operations for the nearly 10-year-old Merchantville storefront, the couple announced Sunday.
In a statement, Burgess and Stevens said they’d hoped to keep the store open until it could be sold to new owners, but “market conditions proved too tough to keep the doors open.”
“Janet and I didn’t take this decision lightly, and will really miss all of our longtime customers, employees, and suppliers,” Burgess said in the statement.
The Collingswood location, which was shuttered August 15, will likely reopen by then under new owners James Liuzza and Joe Muldoon, who will operate the chef-driven market Haddon Culinary there.
Burgess and Stevens said they’re hopeful that another market operator can be found, but aren’t opposed to converting the site to a restaurant if it turns the property over. The 2,900 square-foot corner store features a fully equipped kitchen, refrigeration and cooking equipment.
Commercial real estate broker Joe Riggs of NAI Mertz is representing Burgess and Stevens in finding potential buyers/operators for the Merchantville storefront.
